Area 9 is comprised of the Anthem, Phoenix East, Phoenix West, Phoenix Rotary 100 and Thunderbird Rotary Clubs and the Downtown Social Club – a Phoenix Rotary 100 satellite club. These clubs do all the amazing things that you would expect from any highly-functioning group of clubs.

Here are the president-elects from each of these clubs attending a pre-PETS breakfast just a few weeks ago. From left to right: Randy Long (Phoenix Rotary 100), Hunter Merrill (Anthem), Sandy Petersen (Phoenix West), Betty Ilioi (Thunderbird) and David Rider (Phoenix East).

And so, to highlight just a few of the things these clubs are up to:

The Rotary Club of Anthem
This club meets Friday mornings at 7:15 a.m. at the Ironwood Country Club in Anthem, and they live stream their meetings on Facebook. They chartered in 2002 and are actively engaged in their community. Last year, the Rotary Club of Anthem donated over $50,000 to local and international projects.

On January 26, Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan was the featured speaker.

Phoenix East Rotary Club
Phoenix East Rotary Club meets Thursday noon time at the Balsz School District, and they also have a group of their members that meet in the evening. Here are the members of Phoenix East and Phoenix West at a combined meeting for DG Nancy’s club visit.

This club recently supported a Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona recipient and here is an excerpt from her comments about this club:
“The Angels of the Phoenix East Rotary Club stepped right in, without hesitation, and awarded me a $3,000 scholarship just in the nick of time. As I write this, it is with tears of joy, gratitude and thankfulness to them and Heaven!!”

Now that is an example of People in Action!

Phoenix West Rotary Club
The Phoenix West Rotary Club also meets Thursdays at noon time. Pictured here is current club President Sandy Petersen, shown with the “Rotary Bear” that he must keep in his car for a week. Contact Sandy if you want to know more about this FUN aspect of his Rotary club.

Phoenix 100 Rotary Club
Phoenix Rotary 100 meets Fridays at noon at the Phoenix Country Club. Club President Allister Adel’s focus this year has been on Human Trafficking and Slavery. They recently held a Red Sand Project on Central Avenue to bring awareness to this horrific activity.

Thunderbird Rotary Club
The Thunderbird Rotary Club has been chartered for just over a year and is unique in the Rotary world for being the only club to form on a university campus. They are located at ASU’s Thunderbird School of Management, currently based in Glendale, but in the process of being moved to ASU’s downtown campus. This club is challenged with a “rotating” membership base as members transition into and out of their post-graduate programs. But, if any group of people can make this work and continue to be a vibrant Rotary club, it is this group.

Downtown Social Club
The Downtown Social Club is a vibrant and energetic social club of like-minded active professionals, looking to have fun and do good for the community as part of Phoenix Rotary 100. The satellite club is designed to attract individuals who have an interest in Rotary but have challenging schedules that interfere with a weekly lunch. This type of membership offers fewer meetings at times determined by the membership, and a minimal dues structure. The group currently meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at DeSoto Central Market on Central Avenue and Roosevelt.
