Water Project in Cuba

By Joe Prewitt Rotary Club of Phoenix 100

Dear Rotarians:

Here is something that might have a broader interest for the entire District ... a water project in Cuba.

Below is a string of emails with a Rotarian from the Bay Area that has organized projects and trips to Cuba.  He will be our speaker on August 19.  We hope to hear about what is going on in Cuba and how we might have a water project of our own.

We would like inform other clubs in the Phoenix Metro Area, or any other clubs interested in this subject and offer an invitation to join PhxRotary100 on August 19. This is a great opportunity to hear about what Rotary is already doing in Cuba and how other clubs might either get involved in our project or start one of their own.

Please have anyone wishing to join us RSVP Beth in the Rotary office - rotary@rotary100.org no later than wed, August 17. Lunch is $25 but jumps to $30 for those without RSVP’s. (country clubs rule, not ours.

Hi Brooks!
Spent all last week in Nepal. We installed two sytems that we had shipped in September and were stuck on the Indian side of the border until last month. So we went in the rainy season and contended with washed out roads and heavy rains. But we succeeded at two different villages. We'll return in February to install a third system and then do a 5 day trek through the Annapurna mountains in the Himalyas.

Here are some answers:
1. I'm coming in for the day on August 19th. My flight arrives at 9:05AM (Southwest #226), and departs at 5:15PM (SW#3085). I'll take you up on the offer to pick me up and drop me off, but I can always use Uber if you get too busy.

2. I am planning an April Cuba trip, so this might coincide nicely with your district plans. Hoping to have clear logistics answers about this by August 19th that I can share. As you know, I brought 40 to Cuba this past April. It's a really nice time of year there.

3. Attached is a photo of my mug. Here is a brief bio I usually use...
Jon Kaufman joined Rotary 5 years ago with a specific mission to start a sustainable water project. H2OpenDoors was born to be replicated by clubs worldwide. In that time, the project has installed 16 water purification plants in 8 countries. Each system produces over 20,000 liters every day from virtually any water source. Jon and the project recieved a Jefferson Award in June for public service. The award was established by Jacqueline Onassis in 1972. Jon owns a large marketing company in the Silicon Valley, has a Rotarian girlfriend, a 26 year old son, and a Giant Malamute who is eating him out of house and home.

4. I'm hoping that several Rotarians from other clubs in the entire Phoenix area will also attend your club session that day!

I assume you have audio and visual equipment? I will be bringing my MacBook and have the adapter for your project or TV. It's a presentation packed with LOTS of information and insights, so I hope I'll have at least 25 minutes, including Q&A.

Looking forward to meeting you, Brooks!

Best,

Jon Kaufman

Hi Jon—

Thanks for keeping me in the loop on H2OpenDoors.

A couple of quick items:
  1. We are looking forward to your presentation to our club on August 19th.
  2. Do you have your travel arrangements yet?
  3. As mentioned, I am happy to pick you up at the airport before the program and return you there afterwards.  If you are planning to stay overnight the evening before or afterwards, I can take you to and from wherever you are staying.
  4. Can you send me a copy of your bio and a high-res picture of you that we can use in our club bulletin?  Also, do you have a title you’d like us to use for the presentation?
  5. We will also send the bio and a brief on the presentation title to the other clubs in our district with the idea that this would be a first step toward a district trip to Cuba in the spring (if possible).

I am really looking forward to meeting you and hearing your presentation.

Regards,  Brooks
