Rotary Club of Sun City West Sponsors a Foreign Exchange Student
By Tom Tibbitts - PR Chairman for RC of Sun City West

The Rotary Club of Sun City West welcomed at its August 5th meeting Charlotte Verzini, an exchange student sponsored by the club.  Shown in the photo below is President Dick Stuckey (right) who introduced Charlotte to the members present, and gave her a monthly stipend for expenses. She will be in the United States for approximately one year.

Included in the picture to the left are Lou Rotundo, student counselor and Rotary Youth Services Chair, and Marla Lazere, host family member.  Charlotte, who is from the small village of Tarcienne, Belgium, currently resides with the Lazere family in Peoria while attending Peoria High School as a senior.  Mrs. Lazere’s son is an outbound Rotary exchange student on his way to Brazil.

Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program was started in the 1920’s between a few Rotary clubs in Europe.  Today, more than 8,000 students travel abroad each year to live and study in about 80 countries.  The program provides students with the opportunity to meet people from other countries and to experience new cultures for greater international understanding.  Rotary has sponsored the exchange student program in the West Valley area for several years.

The local Rotary Club meets weekly on Fridays at 11:30 am in the Quail Room at the Sun City West Foundation complex.  Information about the club’s activities and membership opportunities can be obtained by calling Tony Sambol at 623-266-3291.
