International Day of Peace – Rotary and Peace
By PDG Chuck Fitzgerald

Each year on September 21st the international community rallies for the International Day of Peace. This Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

Rotary has the ideal and pursuit of Peace at its core. Earlier this summer, Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko wrote “Creating Sustainable Peace” and Rotary’s ongoing Areas of Focus work in creating the “optimal environment for human potential to flourish.” Mr. Hewko writes about Rotary’s “Positive Peace” efforts. Read John Hewko’s entire article at the Diplomatic Courier: http://www.diplomaticourier.com/2016/06/23/creating-sustainable-peace/

Every time a Rotarian performs an act of service in one of Rotary’s Areas of Focus, we are creating a Positive Peace. Improving health, providing clean water, developing local economies, increasing literacy – all create an opportunity for human potential to flourish. Have no doubt - Rotarians are Peacemakers.

This year on September 21st, a new Peace project will be dedicated at Centennial High School in Peoria. A space has been created on campus to provide students with the opportunity to explore Peace in their own lives, in their families, and on their school campus. This new space includes a Peace Pole, reflection benches, and access to Peace resources. The project is led by the Rotary Club of Peoria with wide support from other local Rotary Clubs.
