Rotary Club of Sun City West
Completes Annual Distribution of Dictionaries
By Tom Tibbitts - RC of Sun City West

The Rotary Club of Sun City West annually provides dictionaries to third grade students enrolled in the 15 elementary schools within the Dysart and Nadaburg School Districts.  This year dictionaries were also distributed to third graders at five Charter schools and 11 Native American mission schools.

In total, approximately 2,700 dictionaries were delivered to the 31 locations during October, the single largest distribution the local Club has ever made.  Prior to delivery, Club members inserted labels in the dictionaries which contained Rotary’s “Four Way Test” and a space for students to write their names to identify ownership of the book.  Since inception of the Dictionary Project in 2006, the Club has distributed more than 20,000 dictionaries to third graders.

Shown in the first photo are five faculty members of Sunset Hills Elementary School in Surprise, and four Rotarians who presented the dictionaries to students and teachers. The five women teachers are left to right: Mrs. Kaiser, Mrs. Sacher, Mrs. Sniezek, Mrs. Ender and Mrs. May.  The four Rotary members shown are Merlyn Carlson, Pieter Vos, Bill Clark and Roger Bowen, Dictionary Project Coordinator.  As shown in the second photo, selective features of the dictionaries were discussed by Rotary members with major emphasis on the importance of learning to use the books.  Following a question and answer session, students individually received their books (third photo).
