How marvelous that members of 9 different Rotary clubs gathered together at the Glendale West Rotary Club meeting on August 20 to welcome guest speaker Dave Berry and his wife/fellow Rotarian Mary Ann Berry.

Berry’s message on “The Twenty-Minute Rotarian” was a thought-provoking and enjoyable illustration of how a very small proportion of our lives, when devoted to Rotary, can make an incredibly significant difference in changing lives.  Berry snipped away at a long strip of paper to emphasize his message and used projects undertaken by his own district to underscore the impact of 20 minutes.  The positive impact of a mere 8 of those 20 minutes is huge... and when the remaining 12 minutes are ‘banked’ for future activities, the results are simply phenomenal.

Berry also touched on membership. Quoting from a post on the Glendale Kachina club’s Facebook page following the event: “Dave Barry from Hawaii spoke to a group of area Rotarians ... He challenged us to invite 10 people to visit our club. You may be surprised but 1 out of 10 will join. Rotary is a wonderful organization to be a part of.  A group of ordinary people coming together to help and serve the community, the nation, and the world!”

After learning that the Berrys were visiting Arizona and would attend their meeting, Glendale West quickly encouraged Rotarians from nearby clubs to visit. Many attendees commented that promoting this meeting was a great idea and voiced hope that more clubs will similarly open their own meetings or even collaborate on hosting dynamic speakers.
